In partnership with Rancho los Cerritos, California Waterfowl introduces the Hunt Programs first deer hunting opportunity. The 1,400+ acres ranch falls within the ranges of the East Park – Capay Deer Herd. The majority of the ranch is rolling open grasslands. These grasslands are covered by wild oats and wooded areas consisting of blue oaks and valley oaks. There are also five man-made ponds on the ranch, three of which are supplied by wells and are kept flooded year-round. In general, the deer tend to spend the day bedded in the shade of the oak trees and in the riparian areas. In the evening through  early morning, many deer travel to the organic agricultural fields and flat grassland areas.  Hunters should expect to see 20-30 deer each day and at least two legal bucks. The rut tends to start the last week of September giving the hunter the best opportunity to harvest a true black-tailed deer. The trouble-free terrain and hunting conditions make this hunt perfect for hunters of all ages and skill levels.

Upper Valley Ranch: Located north of Marysville and east of Gridley, this property can produce great duck hunting opportunities as birds move down the eastern half of the valley from the Oroville Afterbay and surrounding duck clubs.   This ranch was restored by California Waterfowl Association in 1999 and contains over 450 acres of seasonal wetlands and 350 acres of uplands dedicated to waterfowl and pheasant. Situated just north of historic D-10, the property is well known for its mallard harvest throughout December and the ability to work birds with little disturbance due to the lack of neighbors. Managed to produce watergrass and smartweed, the marsh has a long history of supporting large numbers of waterfowl. CWA senior biologist, Chadd Santerre was the habitat biologist who designed and built this spectacular ranch and he will be your host and guide.

Hunt Date: December 7
Capacity: Two hunters

TEAL RIDGE: This property is located a few miles east of the town of Dunnigan, CA along the Colusa drain, otherwise called the Ridgecut Canal.  The 2,200-acre managed marsh typically holds thousands of waterfowl throughout the year and includes its own 200+ acre sanctuary.  The property is intensively managed for both wintering and breeding waterfowl and provides high quality habitat.  Watergrass and swamp timothy intermixed with young trees, tules, and cattails which creates a very attractive setting for both ducks and duck hunters. Hunters will also enjoy a pheasant hunt on this one day combo hunt.

Llano Seco Ranch Mallard Ponds: Located next to Llano Seco Refuge, this is truly one of the premiere duck clubs in the state and nation.  Hunt with longtime guide Merle Leighty in the Llano Seco Mallard Ponds, which features some of the oldest remnant natural marsh and old growth riparian habitats found anywhere in California.  This club is lightly hunted by the landowner and holds thousands of ducks and geese throughout the year.  It’s not uncommon to experience a true gentleman’s hunt where shooters take turns picking nothing but greenheads from flock after flock of up close and personal decoying ducks.  This is a very rare opportunity to hunt one of the most exclusive waterfowl management areas in the country.  Don’t miss your chance for a true hunt of a lifetime!

Hunt Date: December 13
Capacity: Three Hunters

RANCHO CALETA: Located along the western edge of Butte Creek in the Butte Sink, a 375-acre portion of this 1,000-acre property was restored to natural marsh by California Waterfowl biologists a few years back and now provides for incredible waterfowling.  Wetland management units are full of waterfowl food plants such as watergrass and smartweed and are inter-mixed with trees and tules.  The property also contains corn and rice, which can provide some outstanding duck and goose hunting.  The lucky winner and their guest will get a boat ride to the blind with the Sutter Buttes as the main backdrop.  Mallards and wood ducks are the most prevalent species taken on the property. Mike LaMantia, owner will be your guide.

CHICKAHOMINY CREEK RANCH: This property and surrounding areas support large populations of Canada geese which see very little if any hunting pressure.  California Waterfowl biologists and the landowner have been working to restore wetland and riparian habitat throughout the property.  The newly created brood pond and loafing areas will be a huge attractor for both geese and ducks this winter.  It’s not uncommon to see several hundred geese feeding in the harvested rice fields, which are not typically flooded until heavy rainfall events pond water and create ideal feeding conditions and plenty of hunter opportunity.  When the fog hits the valley late in the season, ducks will also find their way to this very private location.  Hunt with Jake Messerli, California Waterfowl’s Vice President of Conservation Programs on a mutually agreeable date.

Special Conditions: There is a self restricted limit of three geese per person. Hunters will shoot out of layout blinds or makeshift blinds constructed on the rice levees, which are heavily vegetated providing more than adequate cover to hide a group of anxious hunters.

This is one of the premier duck clubs in the country. At 2,200+ acres and located just west and adjacent to the closed zones of Howard Slough and Little Dry Creek Wildlife Areas, this club is one of the most beautiful and productive marshes in the Pacific Flyway. In addition to lush watergrass and smartweed fields intermixed with willow trees and tules, Bird Haven Ranch also farms about 1,000 acres of rice and a considerable amount of corn and milo food plots. If you’re not chasing mallards and wood ducks in the oak trees along Butte Creek or in a flooded corn field, you’re sure to see plenty of ducks and geese using the manicured wetlands. Hunters will be driven out to large and comfortable stand up blinds for a morning shoot. Don’t miss this opportunity to spend some time at the one of kind, Bird Haven Ranch.

CLOSED ZONE FARMS
: Located at the northern boundary and adjacent to the sanctuary or “closed zone” of the Little Dry Creek Unit of the Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area. Everything is provided just bring your necessary equipment for shooting and wading in water. Arrive Friday evening enjoy a wonderful BBQ overlooking the marsh with owner Larry Gury and stay the night at the club house. Neighboring the Little Dry Creek Unit of the Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area on the north side, the marsh you will be hunting actually has its entire southern boundary adjacent to the Wildlife Area’s sanctuary. This means that you will be hunting directly adjacent to some of the largest concentrations of mallard and pintail in the state of California during your hunt. The 350+ acre ranch manages 225 acres of some of the highest quality wetland habitat around and also contains over 100 acres of rice. With the help of CWA, projects completed on this property have produced some amazing habitat. The club had a great growth of smartweed and watergrass this year, which provide a great food source for the waterfowl. There are tons of bullrush tules and willow trees throughout the property. The club is only hunted once a week by Larry and only one of the 10 blinds are used on his outings. This allows plenty of rest for the birds and a quality shoot when the property is hunted.  Limits of greenheads are very common and this will be a once in a lifetime hunt.

Special Conditions:  Food, lodging and decoys provided. Both hunts will be guided. Hunters need to bring hunting gear, snacks, and sleeping bags.
