New England is the home of American financial democracythe birthplace of the first credit union and credit union law in the nation.  In Rhode Island, our first credit union, Credit Union Central Falls, was founded in 1915 to serve the French-speaking parishioners of a local church.  The architects of our statute established a principle by which all public policy should be measured: service to consumers first. It is our adherence to this principle as a movement, large and small, industrial and community, state and federal, that makes us leaders, not followers.

The building blocks of our not-for-profit foundation include the tenets of service, volunteerism and cooperation.  This foundation, together with the people and ideals it supports, continues to endure today.

As we look ahead, remember that Rhode Island credit unions have been getting it right by providing high quality, low cost financial services to local consumers for over 90 years.  Our tradition compels us not to be complacent and to continue to provide a competitive, not-for-profit financial cooperative alternative for the benefit of working families in Rhode Island.

Join us at the 2013 Credit Union Governmental Affairs Day and help promote our philosophy and educate our public policy makers.
