Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology and characteristics of breakthrough pain, its prevalence, and the negative impact on patients
- Discuss characteristics of ideal breakthrough pain treatments, available options, and investigational agents
Evaluate key concepts regarding addiction and abuse; ways to minimize risk in cancer patients taking opioids; and strategies to address issues
Explore patient cases and apply practical knowledge learned to improve patient outcomes
Target Audience:
This CME activity is intended for nurses who have an interest in managing breakthrough pain in patients with cancer.
